Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that emphasizes ground fighting and submission holds to control and defeat an opponent. You'll learn to control and submit opponents in a friendly and challenging environment.

No Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a dynamic martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting and submission holds to control and defeat an opponent. Train in a fast-paced, technique-driven environment where you'll develop control and submissions in a fun and challenging setting.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kids

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kids teaches children self-defense, discipline, and physical fitness through ground-fighting techniques and submission holds. Kids will build their confidence and develop a solid foundation in BJJ, regardless of their skill level.

We offer kids classes in two age ranges - 5-8 (Lil Orca's) and 9-12 (Killer Whales). Lil' Orca's is more play based learning and Killer Whales, while still fun and engaging, mimics the adult structure. We run classes from September to May.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art with a strong emphasis on grappling and ground work. Whereas other martial arts rely heavily on speed and strength, BJJ relies on leverage and proper technique to gain superior position on the ground where strikes or submission holds such as chokes and joint locks can then be used (if necessary).

Do I need any experience?

No former experience is necessary and all levels of fitness can enjoy learning BJJ. In our case,  we train as a team and all levels are welcome to train with us.  We encourage all our students to help develop other students, that way we get better as a whole.

I'm not as young as I used to be, is it too late for me to start?

I know its a cliche to say "You're never too old!" but you really never are! Jiu jitsu is truly a martial art for everyone and there is a thriving community of senior practitioners. We tailor our teaching to the individual and it's a sport you can take at your own pace.

Is there a free trial?

First Class is always free for new comers!

What equipment will I need?

Initially, nothing other than an open mind and maybe, shorts and a workout. If you fall in love with the art and wish to progress more you will need to purchase a Kimono or 'GI' as they are more commonly known. It is the standard uniform that most of us start from when undertaking a journey to learn Jiu Jitsu. The beauty of training No GI Jiu Jitsu is you won't need a Kimono and can train in just basic shorts but we do require you wear a rash guard. We use our bodies as our training tools. We simply recommend that you refrain from wearing watches, earrings, rings, bracelets as it is a full contact sport.

Who can do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu…is it safe?

Yes, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant. As with any other sport or martial art accidents can and do happen. This is why safety is our number one concern! At 360 we take the necessary measures to provide a safe training environment for our members.

Can I get in good shape doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Yes, the resistance provided during training can improve reaction time, balance, core strength, and increase flexibility which can lead to reduced body fat and weight loss. The aerobic and anaerobic benefits provided during training can be more effective than doing regular exercise at the gym.

Do I have to compete?

Absolutely not, we understand that not everyone plans to be a competitor. You will still receive the same high level instruction and attention needed to reach your own individual goals for Jiu-Jitsu. The majority in most BJJ schools are non-competitors, but many still take pride in coming out to support the competition team at local and regional tournaments.

How much does it cost?

We offer a variety of flexible payment options for your convenience. Our prices will vary according to which membership package fits your budget and discount eligibility (i.e. military, fireman, and law enforcement). Please feel free to stop by the academy or contact us to discuss a plan that will work best for you.

How does a typical class work?

Students will begin by lining up to bow in before each class. There are times when we will do a light dynamic warm-up before class. However, oftentimes we will go straight in to “teaching”and students will warm-up as they practice techniques. After 50 minutes of class time we once again have everyone line-up to bow out, officially ending class.

At this time students are welcome to leave or stick around to train at their own pace during “open roll”. This time gives students the opportunity to implement techniques they have been learning on a partner who is resisting and trying to counter with their own. This format allows you to move at your own speed, sharpen your skills, and get in a great workout!

What should I wear and what does Gi/NoGi mean?

The Gi is a uniform that is made of sturdy material designed to stand up to rigorous pulling. It provides grips that allow you to throw or control your opponent on the ground. NoGi focuses on BJJ without the benefit of grips or the Gi. Clothing such as shorts, yoga pants, rash guards or T-shirts are all acceptable (Gi bottoms may also be used).

Note: Students taking advantage of our trial class will be provided a clean uniform (Gi) to use during this time.
